Broken Hill

Broken Hill is out in the far west and an oasis in the semi-avid wilderness. It's a mining town and a major centre for Australian art and artists. There are numerous wall murals, sculptures and several art galleries. Even if it's in NSW, Broken Hill is more part of South Australia . It's because they have the same time, the same telephone area code and it's much more close to Adelaide than Sydney .
Worth-seeing is the “Royal Flying Doctor Service Base” at the airport, there you can watch a film about the service, inspect the headquarters, aircraft and the radio room. The “School of Air ” broadcast their lessons to kids in isolated homesteads. You have to book for visiting.
9 km from town are the “Sculpture Symposium”, carved sandstone blocks on a hilltop, built as an international project. You will get some wide views over the plains and you can watch one of Broken Hill's famous sunsets.
The “Touristic Lodge YHA” offer a night in a dorm for A$ 19.
