Katherine |
Katherine is just about 200 km south of Darwin and it is the only town of any size between Darwin and Alice Springs. It’s a bustling place with a productive Aboriginal arts community, many of the didgeridoos and other artworks you’ll find in Alice Springs and Darwin, come from around here. The main interest is the spectacular “Nitmiluk (Katherine Gorge) National Park”, 30 km to the northeast. It’s a great place for camping, walking, swimming, canoeing, taking a cruise or simply floating alone on an air mattress. There are also nice thermal pools and attractive swimming areas like the “Edith Falls” as well as the “Cutta Cutta Caves” – the sole public cave in Northern Territory. There is approx. 7000 years old rock art to visit in the “Katherine Gorge”. The “Rodeo Parachutist Meeting” in the middle of may and the “Canoe Race” in June are also worth seeing. If you want to stay overnight you should go to the “Kookaburra Lodge Backpackers”. They offer a night in a dorm for A$ 18. |
