Murray Bridge

Murray Bridge is approximately 78 km away from Adelaide, lain on the “Murray River” in the north of “Lake Alexandra”. The bridge which named the city was built in 1879. Until then a ferry served for crossing. After building a railway between Adelaide and Melbourne the city became more important.

There are some special places in Murray Bridge: the “Monarto Zoological Park”, the “Butterfly House” with hundreds of living, tropical butterflies, the “Cottage Box Chocolates” there some sweet can be tasted and the production watched, “Captain’s Cottage Museum” Museum with memorials of South Australia and the paradise for children “Puzzle Park” with a 4 km long labyrinth, enormous water chutes, a gigantic chessboard and much more.

You have an impressive panorama view of the city and the river from the “Rotary Lookout and Tower”.

There is also a mystic monster legend about the “Bunyip”, which made Murray Bridge popular. This monster lives in some swamps, rivers, lakes and devours some people from time to time. The Aborigines really believe in the “Bunyip” and they say the Europeans can’t see it with their eyes. The existence of this monster is scientifically disproved only a few years ago. There is a mechanical monster in memory of these stories at the river and if you give it some coins, it will roar loud and wildly. You can spend a night in a dorm for A$ 18 in the “Murray Bridge Backpackers”.
