Port Augusta

Port Augusta is the port at the “Spencer Golf”, which was already discovered and settled by the early Australian researchers. Industries have come and gone since then. The town has obviously suffered economically, but it is a sad and tatty place despite being a major crossroads for travellers and the gateway to the outback.

With railway lines converging here, trains can be caught to Alice Springs and Darwin, the east and west coast, Adelaide and Melbourne. You can visit a station of the “Royal Flying Doctor Service” and get a taste of how a phenomenal medical service operates. You can also visit the “School of the Air”, there pupils in the outback get taught by radio.
