The Olgas |
The Olgas (Kata Tjuta), a bizarre collection of smaller, more rounded rocks, stands 30 km to the west of Uluru. Though less well known, the monoliths are equally impressive and many people find them more captivating. The tallest rock, Mt Olga (564 km), is about 200 m higher than Uluru. The meaning of Kata Tjuta is “many heads”. The European discoverer “Ernest Giles” named Kata Tjuta (the Olgas) after the Queen Olga of Württemberg, thus “the Olgas”. The mountains are officially named as Kata Tjuta since 1995. The Kata Tjuta developed approx. 600 million years ago, together with the Uluru and they are still connected in the underground. It is a sanctuary to the Aborigines and they say, the Kata Tjuta gives you creative energy from the dreamtime. |
